Saints & Sinners Review: Calloway’s “First Lady Ella Johnson is a force to be reckoned with!”
Article reprinted from The Plain Dealer, March 6, 2016:
Set in a small Georgia town near Atlanta, the new drama ”Saints & Sinners” is a steamy mix of deceit, greed, corruption and murder. Might the setting for this power struggle be City Hall, a powerful local business or maybe a hospital?
Nope. Welcome to the Greater Hope Baptist Church. Premiering tonight on Bounce TV, the network founded in 2011 for black viewers, ”Saints & Sinners” explores the complex world of a church that’s a major player in a small town.
Looming over that world is the formidable figure of ”first lady” Ella Johnson, played by Vanessa Bell Calloway.
”One of the things that most appealed to me about this series is that the women are so strong,” said Bell Calloway, the Toledo native who grew up in Cleveland. ”Not just me, but the mayor, played by Gloria Reuben, and my daughter, played by Jasmine Burke. These are very strong female characters, and Lady Ella is not your typical sit-inthe-church-with-a-new-hatevery- Sunday kind of firstlady.” No, she’s not. When she speaks her mind, you’d better listen.

Vanessa Bell Calloway Cast in A&E’s Crime Drama: “The Infamous”
Casting has begun on A&E’s pilot for what will be a pre-riots 1990s-set Los Angeles crime drama, titled “The Infamous,” which hails from Joshua Zetumer (writer of the upcoming X-Men “Gambit” spinoff), and will follow the collision between a reformed South Central gangster looking to leave his criminal past behind him (but they keep pulling him back in, I’m sure), and the LAPD detective who is determined to take him down.
Vanessa Bell Calloway has landed a series regular role, playing Ellie, a mother (likely to one of the two leads) and gifted singer who once performed with James Brown but now drives a city bus.

In Her Words: Vanessa Bell Calloway Shares Her Breast Cancer Survival Story
Six years ago, I woke up from my sleep with the funniest feeling. Others call it a hunch or voices from the dead, but I knew God was whispering in my ear to tell me something was wrong. Even though I wasn’t in any pain, I needed to call my physician as soon as possible for an appointment.
I wanted every test he could administer in his office, so he gave me a CAT scan and blood work. Then he asked, “When was your last mammogram?”
I had missed my test that year by about four months, because the clinic I frequented had closed permanently and I hadn’t found another yet. My doctor suggested a facility right down the street from his office, so I went that same day for an examination.
A couple of days later, the nurses called and said there were some suspicious calcifications in my right breast. I told myself at that moment, “That’s what God was telling me.”
I went back, and the radiologist read my x-ray to point out some questionable white dots. Although he couldn’t detect anything specific until I had a biopsy, I believed it was cancer. Days later, I found out I was right.
